Clarias gariepinus lives mainly in the very muddy water from inland rivers which flow in Lake Malawi, sometimes they are found in the Lake in the environment of these river mouths. They can be found not only in Lake Malawi but also throughout the whole eastern part of Africa. This species can reach a length of approximately 60 cm so it is not really a species to keep in a small aquarium. They are omnivores and they will be very easy to keep in an aquarium provided that they, of course, are offered for sale. As far as we know this species is so far not yet exported from Malawi for aquarium lovers. This example is caught in Tanzania for scientific purposes at the University of Antwerp. |
